hi, and thanks for you replies.

Billy we are off last week in July 1st week in August next year, opted for the cheap ferry crossing, although we quite fancy Brittany area, but there seems to be 100's of campsites to choose from, and to be honest with this being my first time abroad EVER !!! sad eh, i really hav'nt got a clue where to start, everywhere seems nice, all i know is that we would like a beach nearby, hopefully some decent weather, and a site that aint too big. Oh and plenty of interesting places to see .

Cheers

Stop messing about, get over there and investigate for yourself.  You'll soon know whether you like a place or not.  If you don't, move on.  As you said, there's plenty to choose from.

Hi Janey!--decide what sort of campsite you want--if you want cheap basic-look out for camping municipals--council run sites for as little as £6 per night--if you want sites with shops & swimming pools theres plenty of those as well--be pretty busy at the time yore going but theres no need to book(imho)yool always get in somewhere--get a map of France-decide where you want to go-put the main towns into Google to find their websites & you will find campsites in the area listed---with their websites---

Personally I would suggest the Caravan Club European Guide which is available to non members. All reports by members so no commercial pressure to make a site sound better than it is. I have used the Alan Rogers Guide and consider it quite good but we have been disappointed on occasions.

Wish these websites had been around for our first visit to France 20+ years ago.

I also recommend the Caravan Club website for impartial and comprehensive list of sites.  I can recommend the area around La Baule for your first trip.  Still in Brittany so easy drive from ferry, but on the Atlantic Coast - not far from St Nazaire if you're looking at your map.  Said to be the most beautiful beach in Europe - it's 5 miles long so you won't have to fight the Germans for a spot to lie down - it's also dead flat and you can walk hundreds of yards into the sea without it coming much past your waist so it's pretty safe for wee ones.  Or you can look for sites with pools and all the trappings.  There are heaps of sites in the area (on a budget you can't beat municipals and wee private sites - unless the kids need entertaining and you need meals made for you in the site restaurant)  Don't worry about it - just go - you'll love it.   Unless you're very unlucky, the weather should be great too.  Enjoy!
