Regards the spare specs thing, I drive for a living and always carry a spare pair of specs, not to mention my prescription sun-shades, fact is you don't need a law to ensure you have these bits of kit, it is just common sense, are realy some folk that stupid?.
Why is this thread called "Rip off Britain?" It's rip off Halfords, surely? (Halfrauds, I like that!) I got a bundle last year from Tesco for £1 a go including kids size.

Sensible French law. If you need glasses to drive, what are you going to do if you break them?
I can't believe the number of people who go on holiday without a spare pair...
I wear varifocals all day, but don't actually *need* them for driving as I have one eye without much prescription at all and the optician at the last test said I was ok to drive without them. When I wear contact lenses they only actually prescribe one!
As my glasses cost about £260 a pair I don't actually have a 'spare' pair... I do a pair of vari sunglasses and a pair of off the shelf reading glasses. I guess I could get a cheapo pair of 'distance' ones made?
That being said, when I am not wearing them I find my worse eye gets fatigued due to the astigmatism, so if I lost or broke my glasses and my eyes were tired I'd get OH to drive - simples!
If you need a spare pair try here, about £15 delivered and to your prescription http://www.goggles4u.co.uk/ I've used them before, not brilliant but perfectly adequate for a spare pair.
