Fancy camping in Spain some time so looking for future years, as all booked up for this year. But are the Long crossings always so expensive?
We need the school holidays, whenever I price up a long crossing, it seems to come out at nearly £1000? Am I missing something or is this how much it costs?

they are very expensive arent they. We priced up the P&O crossing from Portsmouth-Bilbao for a 7 metre motorhome and it came out at £650 return that was booking last September, dithered which I am well known on here for and the next time I looked it had gone up a couple of hundred pounds. We got a few really nice Spanish site brochures at the NEC and hubby trying to persuade me to think about going next summer. If we do we'd drive down through France stopping over at least twice then get the ferry back as its the drive back home we hate. Plus the inbound journey takes less time than the outbound.

I think you need to start comparing prices as soon as they are announced, around September/October time. Get quotes from the Ferry Companies, and then organisations such as the Caravan Club, Camping Cheques, Eurocamp Independent, Alan Rogers, and so on - there are often 'competing' special offers around at this time of year.
It's not likely you'll get a really cheap crossing, but you might slice something off the price of around £1,000 - however with a caravan it's likely to remain completely out of our league at least as we don't spend that much on our whole holiday!
I don't think you're missing anything, mzzy. I'd like to camp in Northern Spain - it's a lovely region - we visited a few years ago. And we're in Somerset, so Plymouth's much more convenient than, say, Dover.
But if you want to go in school summer hols, and you want cabins there and back, it's £1000 plus for us and the campervan. The Brittany Ferries ships are pretty full during August, so there must be a lot of people around with much more disposable income than me.
It's a shame, but I've basically written off the idea until the daughter leaves school and we can go in May or October.

It's the time that's the problem, Wendy. If you're both at work it's hard getting enough leave to cover the school holidays, and getting even two weeks off at the same time is hard.
If we could afford Brittany Ferries, we could leave Somerset on the Saturday morning and be in a campsite near Santander early Sunday afternoon. Then 12 nights in Spain and home.
Doing the long drive via Dover, taking it easy so it's not a chore, it would be late Tuesday afternoon before we got there, and we'd only have 8 nights in Spain. And the petrol would cost about £400 there and back.
(maybe this is why we're flying to Turkey this year for our main hol!)

After September there will only be one ferry going direct to spain, as P&O are withdrawing their service to Bilbao
I think if the ship sailed daily you could do it as quickly as you say, but there are limited sailings per week now - and you'd struggle within a two week holiday to get there and back.
One of the advantages of the short crossings is that if you miss a sailing there is always another along within an hour or so. We were put off the Portsmouth crossings years ago when we very nearly missed our sailing.
Easiest way is to learn to love the drive, I think! We do, now that we don't have children with us - we just enjoy it wherever we are, finding nice places to stop and picnic, taking in the sights, and enjoying what rural (off the autoroute) France has to offer.

We stopped going on the Plymouth - Santander route last year because of the cost, I just couldn't justify the £1000+ cost so we switched to Plymouth -Roscoff. (With Plymouth on our doorstep we have been on the deck of the ferry within 30 mins after leaving home)
The kids loved the ferry to Spain, it was a great start and end to the holiday. Northern Spain was fantastic, great beaches that were pretty quiet. The weather could be a bit variable but we will return there one day.
We have looked at going from other ports and driving but I can drive anything up to 1000 miles a week so I take every opportunity to avoid it when on holiday ( Mrs P's driving is bad enough in the UK without being on the wrong side of the road so sharing the drive is not really an option.)
I am saving airmiles though, I cleared my account out two years ago and got around a £400 discount the last time we went to Santander which made the bill a bit easier to swallow.
