I agree that meals can be rather too large - such a shame to waste anything though!

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that in towns Turkish and other Middle Eastern restaurants/takeaways are fairly common: cheap and not over the top on portion size; especially good for vegetarians.

Horse Salami isn't bad, I've tried it, but my daughter would kill me if she knew.

I am German and it's quite funny to read here, as many Germans don't want to travel the UK as they think the food is so bad.

To Brian: yes some disgusting foodstuff does exist, but I wouldn't complain about jelly stuff with pigs brain, if I lived in a country, where black pudding and haggis are specialitys (both of which I like)

We NEVER go to restaurants cos they are rather expensive.

A few hints:

Sauerkraut is better than you may think

You can find Schnitzel in a big variety, several Restaurants sell only Schnitzel-dishes

Our breakfast usually consists of bread/bread rolls with jam/honey/cheese/sliced meats (huge assortments)

I have never seen a restaurant with communal tables unless for familys, parties of course.

If you want to know what we eat, have look around Aldi and Lidl, that'll give you a rough idea.

Don't be afraid, there are no kids inside kids meals, no hunters in Jägerschnitzel!

Where about will you be going? We've introduced several British friends to German cuisine and find that Bratkartoffeln are the favourite!

Markus

And someone once told me that you Germans had no sense of humour - PMSL !!!

You should watch Der Staplerfahrer!

I don't go to Germany very often but I seem to recall a lot of Bambi and Thumper based dishes...

Do they not eat food like the rest of us?

I went to Germany when I was visiting Freebird just before Christmas, must admit I didn't have anything to eat in Germany but was very impressed with the cleanliness and the friendly people

I can recommend Freeby's cooking though

I loved the fact that apple strudel was on the menu for a main course! Vegetarian dishes can be quite scarce though. The only place I saw communal tables was at beer fests! We had a lovely drink down in Bavaria made with Dunkel beer  and cherrry schnappes, yummy! Lots of schnitzels to be had.
