We're trying Brittany after a 3 year break after last going there in June 2007 - we went for 16 days and my sister in law came with us for the first week - she had 7 days of rain and we felt really sorry for her - but by the end of 16 days we felt more sorry for ourselves as it rained every single day - we had half a day on a windy beach with towels around us! This will be our last try - if weather's ok , we'll be back to our annual trip! Last summer had to cancel our proposed 2 week stay at Freshwater East CC site as it was under water, but got last minute cancellation at Southlands, Isle of Wight and had fantastic holiday - weather hotter than rest of UK and felt like we were abroad!

Hi we are going camping for the 1st time to France this year... We are going with friends whom have been once before.

We booked through Alan Rogers after lots of investigation and website searches by myself. We are going to La Cote d`Argent site as it is next to the beach, travelling from portsmouth to Caen with about a 6hr drive from then. We have decided to stop in a F1 hotel on way down not sure on way back will see how we get on. We are going mid Aug 2010, so hopefully we will get some sun....

I hope you find what you are looking for and have a good holiday (ps  very easy booking through Alan Rogers and the sales rep on the phone was very helpful both when I rang for advise and to book)

Hi,

We live between Grimsby and Sc**thorpe. We have been to France 3 times, twice to the Vendee and once to the Alps.

I thought you may like an idea of ouor travelling times and where it took us to!. We have always used the channel (Hull very expensive and we didn't think it was worth it.....personal choice).

We have done the Dover to Dunkerque, Norfolk Line crossing, leaving home early in the morning and making the noon crossing when we went to the Alps and the 2pm one for the Vendee. We found travelling down on a Sunday best if you have the time, less traffic, especially around the Dartford crossing.

We then tend to drive until about 6-7pm on the other side and then stop in a cheapish overnight hotel, which we pre book online (we did a very cheap one the first year and since have used the Camponille, which have onsite restaurants or a meal!). Going to the Vendee we stopped the other side of Rouen (on 'the cow' roundabout) and to the Alps somewhere in the Champagne region (I can not remember where). We prefer this option, just an overnight bag to take out the car rather than setting up tents. We are only a family of 3 and so only need one hotel room which makes it a reasonable cost.

The following morning we get up and set off about 7.30ish, stopping for breakfast and lunch,(they have great service areas in France) aiming to arrive at the campsite around 2-3pm, which gives plenty of time for stting up and a swim before dusk.

I don't do much of the driving, but we stick to the toll roads as much as possible, quick, quiet and easy to follow.

Hope this helps.

We were recommended Camping Bel in La tranche sur mer, Vendee for our 1st trip to france. It was a nice journey from St Malo ferry port, campsite very friendly, weater was wonderful and it was walking distance to 4 beeches, town and supermarket. Perfect for families with children and not a huge site. We loved it and wouldnt hesitate in going back there. There are just too many campsites and too little time! The family that recommended it to us have been going there for years and their kids (now teens) still ask to go back there.

If you don't mind being flexible then don't actually book your campsite - there's no point in going further south than you need to.

Last year we arrived in the Loire about August 17th with the intention of staying a night or two before heading south - the weather was glorious and we ended up staying 8 nights before heading South simply to get some 'beach and waves' because we like to bodyboard.

We go for 21 nights so we can travel further without it feeling like we have spent the whole holiday in the car.

If I only had 10 days I think I'd aim for the Loire - its about 5 hours from Calais, so you can probably do that without an overnight if you split the driving, or get to Dover the night before and travel early morning next day? You don't want to spend more days travelling than being on holiday.
