we stayed at Etaples municipal last year, next door to the cemetary, we did both have scary dreams that night, almost nightmares......weird.

Highly recommend 'Camping Ypra' in Kemmel, just inside Belgium border and near Ypres. Great walking & cycling country round WW1 sites, and interesting museum in the tourist office in Kemmel. Easy drive / bus to Ypres.

The Flanders Field museum and the Last Post at the Menin gate are "must see".

Nearby in France, you should visit "La Coupole" (the Dome)at St Omer (good municipal site nearby). This is WW2, but a fantastic place - a huge underground complex for assembling and launching V2 rockets - audio tours, displays, contemporary films etc.. included. La Coupole was overrun by the allies before it could be used.
A fantastic place to see.

Have been looking for good municipal near St Omer - do you have details of the one you have mentioned?

Try Googling "Camping Ypra" - plenty of info, though you may have to translate from Flemish.

As for St Omer, I use the municipal site at Arques (as in the glass - Cristal d'Arques). It's a basic, but respectable site a few minutes walk from the town, and not too far from La Coupole (the route is well signposted, but a bit convoluted!).

La Coupole is a massive undertaking and you need quite a while to see it all. Imagine the London Dome built in concrete and buried deep underground! The ticket includes a return visit within a number of months.

Thanks the site at Arques sounds perfect.  We only want to stay a few days before we head on.  We have stayed at Chateau Gandspette before (and visited La Coupoule which is an absolute must see) but wanted something a bit cheaper.  Did you book in advance?  We are due to be getting off the tunnel around 7pm ish.  Could we just turn up?

We rarely, if ever, book in advance, so we just rolled up to the site at Arques, but earlier in the day, so I don't know about the reception times.

Glad you liked La Coupoule - it's quite a place!

There is a good site on the outskirts of Verdun. It has been reviewed on here. While Verdun was not part of the Brittish battlefront there are some very impressive places to visit including a number of forts. Certainly well worth a few days in the area.

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=5429 - Port de Plaisance nr Peronne.

We're also on a battlefield trip this summer & this looked like a good option (all depends what sort of site you're after tho).  Peronne's museum gets good write ups & the campsite is hopefully near quite a few WW1 locations.

Really looking forward to the trip, my daughter (who went with school recently) recommends the Newfoundland memorial.

Do you have any recommendations for memorials/particular locations to visit?
