I've told the story on here several times, of when we were travelling south to Val de Cantobre years and years ago. We had an overnight stop at the Formule 1 at Issoire, and on the television there was a French news item about La Retour - the day when all the French go home. There was a shot of the autoroute with miles of queueing traffic, and one solitary car heading south on an otherwise empty motorway - they zoomed in on the car - and mentioned 'Only the British are going South.....'. as part of the news item. It was our car, a Citroen BX with roof box, and bikes on a rear mounted bike rack!!!! Fame at last.
By a strange coincidence, on our way home from the same holiday, at a hotel in the north of France we saw an item about the International Juggling Festival being held in Leeds, and there being interviewed by a French television reporter was David's mum - being asked what she thought about the juggling competition (as it was a French juggler who had won!)
We've often travelled over that weekend, and there is never a problem in travelling south, only in going north with the hordes of French people returning home. I always wonder why no one ever seems to be returning home in a southerly direction!!!???!!!
