Ive heard and seen them but then again ive spent many years cycling and walking in europe. Best place i heard them was picos de europa in Northern spain (1988) and the two best sightings have been in the abruzzo national park and grand paradiso national park both in Italy. Abruzzo is also the best place to see bears in western europe.
Not sure about Wolves in Ardennes but think not,Have seen wild boar there.

No wild cats, GD? I think one of the Forest of Dean sites doesn't allow tent camping because of wild boar.
Regarding the OP, I'm rather disappointed (and somewhat relieved) to conclude they're probably captive wolves.
The website's TV news video shows food being thrown to them over a fence.
There is a wolf park in the hills outside Gueret in the Limousin. Pack of wolves live in huge natural enclosures with paths in between them and viewing points. You can also visit at night time to hear them howling. Not quite in the wild but still a good day out.

Wolves here in the Ardennes and also worth visiting is Le Loups du Gevaudan, in the Lozere, just off the A75 - again semi-wild in the forest. It's much easier to get to than it used to be with the autoroute. There is also a folklore story of the Bete du Gevaudan, which supposedly, in the middle ages, slaughtered more than 120 people! Scary stuff - it scared my sons, anyway!!! The wolves are actually rather beautiful.
I think wolves are beautiful fascinating & much misunderstood creatures, they've been victimised & it'sa tradgedy they've been wiped out in so many places. Unfortunately I don't think we'll be going near these areas (we do still hope to visit france in september) but I would so love to see wolves in the wild. To be in a tent & hear them howling in the night would be wonderful - as long as not right outside the tent !
