As we only have a weeks holidays this year we are flying into Rodez and I'm researching a riverside campsite with mobile homes, river beach and pool with waterslide for kids aged 9-12. So far I've looked at Val de Cantobre, and Peupliers or Peyrelade in Riviere sur Tarn. Cantobre looks too much like home, ie ploughed fields and no life within 10 miles. We would like to be somewhat near a village for an evenings stroll! Peyrelade has fantastic beach access (but tiny pool & no slide) but looks far more interesting on the satellite map. Has anyone gone into Peyrelade and seen it first hand? I see a lot more poeple are familiar with Peupliers.

Am I missing other nice campsites that are within a 1.5 hours journey of Rodez airport? We want to be near fantastic scenery so the Lac de Pareloup probably isn't as nice as Tarn valley.

This forum is so helpful as there is a bewildering array of sites to choose from. I was initially confused by the different Peupliers campsites (one in Poitou Charentes near Couhe).

Val de Cantobre is a lovely site - probably much better than it looks on the website and the scenery is stunning, but it is a long way from anywhere - although a morning walk will take you into Nant which is a nice little village, especially on market day.  We've walked in many times with our sons when they were smaller. We had lots of lovely times at Cantobre, and went back many times following our first visit in 1983.

Peyrelade is popular - and I think still has Eurocamp and other tour operators, so perhaps lots of friends for the children.  The beach is lovely, and gets plenty of sun, pitches are quite shady, as they are at Les Peupliers.  We've not stayed at Peyrelade, but have visited friends there.

The pool at Les Peupliers is about the same size as Peyrelade - both only small pools, but that's because people tend to 'mess about in the river'!  The slide at Les Peupliers is not a huge one - and it is only open limited hours.  Les Peupliers is situated in the village of Riviere sur Tarn - out of the gate and you're in the village.  Peyrelade is a bit further to walk to anywhere.  The village of Riviere sur Tarn is only small though!  A Boucherie, a Boulangerie, a mini-shop, and a couple of small restaurants, and I think that's it - oh except for the lovely old man who sells his garden fruit and vegetables!

The scenery of the Tarn and Dourbie valleys is wonderful I think - and better than that around Lac de Pareloup, definitely.

Have you thought about a site in Millau itself - plenty of 'evening stroll' opportunities, and some fantastic views even from there.  You're also an easy drive into the Tarn and Jonte gorges, and also within easy shopping distance of a supermarket.  There are lots of sites situated alongside the river - I'm not sure if many of them have slides, though,  but campsites in that area tend not to have really.  I think Camping du Viaduc has small slides - or one of the sites alongside the river does, I've seen them from the other side of the road.

I don't suppose this has helped you choose, much at all, sorry!

Like Val says there really is VERY little at Val de cantobre apart from the camping and the jaw dropping views.

We stayed at Peyrelades last year in June for 3 nights. It'snot within walking distance of any towns. I wrote a review of it here. We enjoyed our stay but the pool is small, with no longers. The sun disappears quite early due to being in the valley and shines into the site  a bit later for the same reason.Canoes can be hired from the site.

Hi,

We stayed at le Peyrelade in 2007 for 4 nights. We had a pitch near the river & a great view to wake up to. The river & beach were good for messing around & swimming in & our son, 11 at the time, enjoyed it. We were there in late July: it was hot & sunny but I think we did lose the sun quite early in the evening as said previously. There were no English tour operators on site when we were there. It's a small site with not many facilities, just a small bar & takeaway but has a relaxing feel to it. We did consider going back this year but have gone for Les Rivages instead, as it's within walking distance of Millau & has the draw of a tennis court & football pitch!

Fiona
