Some areas have a ban on charcoal BBQ's in the dry summer months. The south of France and the heavily wooded coastal areas almost always ban charcoal BBQ's. These are local by-laws and not the sites being jobsworthy. Might be worth checking with your site.

We always buy a BBQ from Lidl. They have had them every year since forever and the price has never changed, £4.99. Small enough in box to take 5 mins to assemble then chuck it at end of hol.

Always worked for us. In fact bought one for this years trip last weekend!

As already mentioned, some sites do not allow charcoal BBQs, and I shall strongly advise you to check with the campsite first if they are allowed to avoid disappointment.

I bought myself a Cadac Safari Chef with the intention to use it for cooking while in France.

It is not great as a BBQ as it is not hot enough and food takes too long to cook IMHO. However, its other cooking methods such as using the cover as a wok, and the flat/griddle plate will do nicely for me. I would bring a suitcase stove or two to supplement it.
