As already mentioned, some sites do not allow charcoal BBQs, and I shall strongly advise you to check with the campsite first if they are allowed to avoid disappointment.
I bought myself a Cadac Safari Chef with the intention to use it for cooking while in France.
It is not great as a BBQ as it is not hot enough and food takes too long to cook IMHO. However, its other cooking methods such as using the cover as a wok, and the flat/griddle plate will do nicely for me. I would bring a suitcase stove or two to supplement it.
