We had no luck with our 60 cm satellite dish in France so sold it! Not sure if it was where we were or lack of knowledge/patience setting it up!
Would like the TV for hols, but then its nice to get away from the norm and have to talk to each other, will take some DVD's to watch on mini player instead.
You must have been doing something wrong or had an equipment failure as a 60cm dish should be fine for most of France

You will struggle with just a normal TV. Depending where you are going to in Germany it is possible to pick up BFBS tv.
If you are taking a laptop to Austria most BP and Shell service areas offer free wi-fi, just park at the side of the petrol station and you can normally pick it up.
If you really wish to listen to the news it is looking like the radio.
There is an English station in Luxembourg, UK and US forces radio in Germany, FM4 which is in English in the mornings.
You pay a small subscription and you can then use the BBC, ITV and CH4 players abroad using wi-fi and a laptop. It masks the fact that you are coming in on a non-UK ISP because normally you aren't allowed access outside of the UK. It means you have to watch programmes after they are aired in the UK but that wouldn't be a real problem for me.
When we went to Brittany last year we managed to pick up terrestial TV from Jersey (its only 30 miles off the coast) - we were near St Malo.
Should have been receiving satellite TV but some cabbage (me) had done an update on Vista just before we left home and the new go faster version of Vista with the service pack refused to recognise my usb satellite receiver.

Not everyone has a laptop (including us)!
Quite - and not everyone has a television, satellite account &c.. I was just suggesting that one alternative, with the increased availability of free WIFI access, to the complexity/expense of television would be to use a laptop: buying one if necessary - you could also keep in touch with your favourite forum!
We have the tv and satellite as everyone knows by now I think. Don't really need a laptop but might buy one sometime soon. Might not go down too well using one whilst on holiday as OH thinks I am on the PC too much anyway!

On the Cote d'Azur try Riviera Radio. Broadcasts entirely in English from Monaco.
