Hi all,

My first question! - looking at a variety of campsite websites all over Europe it appears common for sites to charge extra for a 'large' tent. Of course small and large are different things to different people(!) but as a guideline, what would be the largest small tent?

It will be just the two of us but we're planning to live in the tent for up to 5 months so need some space. Am currently looking at the Outwell Carolina M 3 man as the kind of size that would be ideal. My car is titchy so will not serve as a living area (unless the tent has an upset!).

We've camped a few times but never for more than 4 or 5 days or so.

Thanks in advance for any advice!
Geoff

I've not really come across French sites that charge extra for large tents although plenty charge less for backpackers & cyclists but this will be because they don't have a car. You will not get charged extra for the tent you intend using.

I agree with Tentz. We - that's 2 of us - have camped for a number of years with a tent and Ford Mondeo. We normally go for 6 weeks at a time because that is our max car insurance without return to UK. We started off with an Asda tunnel tent 6m x 2m then when that started to leak we bought a a EasyCamp Taranto 500 at about 5m x 3m. We also bought a much larger tent in France because the French seemed to go in for bigger tents and greater comfort! Don't forget that lots of motorhomesand caravans are bigger than some tents but then tents have guy ropes

France is great for camping because you live outside the tent in your nice demarcated area - often hedged - all the time. Pitch fees are very reasonable for your 100 sq m - not like crammed in UK campsites! There are lots of opportunities to pick up accessories in France too, so if you find you need extra pegs etc you can just go along to the local supermarket and buy some.

5 months sounds like bliss to me. Pack your tent, stove, torch and sleeping bag and enjoy it.

We managed to pack into our mondeo last summer: 2 tents - one small for instant use in case of rain on arrival, canoe, portopotti, cadac, table, various chairs, 2 folding bikes etc. We removed the back seat for extra space as we had seen others do and it seemed like a good idea as we always came back home with loads of extras. So - 5 months - well, go prepared!

I think some sites will charge less for back packer tents because they tend to sqeeze a lot into a small space in a designated tent area. If its a roomy tent then I expect they would want you to have a normal pitch. As has been said this won't generally be a problem in France but it could be in some other countries where the average pitch can be 70/80 sq mts. It might be worth looking at the ACSI and Camping Cheque websites as they often give pitch size.

David

Thanks all - very helpful :)

We're definitely not going to fit into a backpackers pitch because we have a car (albeit small - I have asked elsewhere about the possibility of fitting a roof rack / roof box to a Toyota Paseo!).

As for removing rear seats or even keeping things on the back seats, I'd be worried that our insurance would be invalid in the even of a break in. Was planning to keep nowt but a couple of chairs, a table and any recent groveries there...

Cheers!
Geoff

Not had an issue with paying extra for a big tent in France. Did have a problem with having to pay per tent though so we pitched the 12 man for an overnight stop rather than 2 2-man tents one night....
I'd love to take the back seat out of the car but then the kids would have nowhere to sit. I assume its still wrong to put them in the roof box? Can't see why your car insurance should be invalid in case of a break in though - that's what its for. Why not ring up and check - you will need to let the company know that you are out of the country for longer than 30 days anyway.

Hmm yeah I'll have to do some serious research into the insurance thing. I would be worried that if some scamp saw belongins on the back seat (even stuff under a blanket or similar) they might clock the fact that the boot is full of goodies (camera, laptop). Then they could break a window, open the boot from inside etc.. and the insurance people might not pay up if they deduced belongings were 'on show' (I don't like to lie!). But yeah like you said - I need to ask.

As for tent size, well we'll not be spending much time in France though reckon we'll just get the smallest comfortable size and an awning. It's a long way away, am just feeding my excitement at this point!

Cheers,
Geoff
