we paid £550 for our crossing including a trailer.Add the the cost of hotels, fuel, food, tolls ,more travelling less holiday ,more time of work, wear and tear on your car and moaning chidren, there is not much difference in the price than a short crossing.Going to france is a once a year holiday so an extra £100 is well worth paying.

Or more like £492 pounds more than our ferry crossing, at £58.00 return for car and caravan - the saving will pay for our campsite fees, fuel, and quite a lot of our food and wine!!

Hi Matthew.

Each to thier own I guess, but know way would I fork out over £500 for a ferry crossing, we still get a 14 days on our main site, and the two budget hotel, overnights we do in France each way, are all part of the holiday, in fact we spend the best part of three days getting down to the main site, which when you break it down is an average of 330 miles per day for us, which makes for a very stress free way of doing things, like Val we paid £58 for our July return crossing for car + trailer.  When we used to take our Son, when he was a lot younger, he loved the travelling almost as much as the main holiday, I agree with you about the time of work, as this year I have booked three weeks of work, for what in effect is a fortnights holiday, but this does allow me a couple days of before we set off, and the same when we get back, as the total days away are 18 days.

Andy.

I have done Portsmouth-St Malo overnight in the past and it is a lovely way to arrive in France. Breakfast out the way and half way down the country already. I would love to be able to afford to do it again but unfortunately we have to do the maths these days. So its eurotunnel for £8 thanks to Mr Tesco and Hotel B&B x 2 at 49 euros with breakfasts. Almost no tolls as we are doing the N roads this year and around 35 euros worth of diesel each way to get to the Loire and back.

Carol
