Hi guys

We are off to France next month camping for the first time. Everything sorted, just got travel insurance to buy.  However the ferry from Dover is before 9am and as we live in Sheffield it means we would have to set off for Dover at about 2am ish?? Which is maybe a little early, oops!

So we thought maybe drive down Friday evening and stop nearer (doesn't have to be IN Dover but more than an hours drive from the ferry ports and en-route (ish), in a b&b travelodge etc.  I have looked at prices of TL's and Prem. Inns but they are roughly £60- can't I get anything much cheaper for the 1 night, 1 room? Thanks guys x

We used the travel lodge just outside Dover - 15 minutes drive to the ferry terminal. It was ideal for us as there were 5 of us, all squashed into one room for £50! Couldn't find anywhere cheaper

The Premier Lodge by the ferry port is very good. 5 minutes away. Reasonable meals in the adjoining pub.You might find some local B and B cheaper. Try Deal its 9 miles away.

We stayed at a Travelodge off the A2 when we sailed from Dover a couple of years ago - it was about £29 then, I think? About 30 mins drive away from the ports.

Sounds like a plan, we always drive down to Dover, setting of from home around 06:00hrs, and always book a 16:00hrs crossing, although we have never caught that sailing, as we always get to the port for an earliar crossing, and do our first overnight just South of Dunkerque, F1 or B&B budget hotel, this year have decided to go for a "Premiere Class" hotel, they are under £40 for the night, anyway as your planning to stay on this side of the channel, somthing I have never done, the only cheapy hotel I can think of is the F1 at either Barking or Thurrock, again under £40 and both with secure gated parking, but may be to far out from Dover for you.

There is a new budget hotel, (a premier lodge I think) on the A2 just outside Canterbury. It might be easier to get into being a little bit further from the port than the ones near Dover. YOU will still be only 1/2 an hour from Dover. Although the M20 is always given as the preferred route to the channel ports you will find if you go onto the A2/M2 after the Dartford crossing you will get to Dover much quicker and with less traffic unless you are travelling at the rush hour times. Also the A2 is never closed due to "operation stack"
