No Huw, you're not the only one. Almost everyone who visits our bit of France remarks on the lack of rubbish strewn around. On roads, verges, towns and villages.
Whether your remark is offensive to your fellow Brit or not is a moot point. It certainly isn't to me, nor should it be to Leomar who also lives in France and should notice the marked differences you pointed out between UK & French roads and roundabouts!
Val - as always, well said. That's EXACTLY the reason why. There's more to it though. Swimming pools come under strict rules and regulations here. Especially on the larger campsites, which are habitually inspected by the local health authorities. If the water tests show signs of deterioration, the campsite pool could be closed down. This is one of the reasons why it's a 'speedo's only' rule too. Quite apart from the crap you carry on your clothing causing blockages to filters etc. there's a health issue and water management aspect too. If (God forbid) the pool water goes beyond a salvageable state, the only recourse is often to empty & refill. At €2 per cubic metre (1000 litres). Ours holds just 22'000 litres, so not a great big cost. But try filling it 3 times per season due to crud in the filter, suntan cream etc. rendering the filter useless. Imagine that cost on a bigger site, where 100'000 litres is small by comparison?
Oh, and if the pool water quality fails in high summer, and there's drought measures in place, the owners would be fined heavily for re-filling the pool, should they have to.
As an aside, it's accepted here that you'll pull over to the side of the road and pee on the verge. It isn't against the law as it is in the 'enlightened' UK. One of the reasons we pee on our lawns (when we don't have guests, of course) is that water is metered, and in long, hot summers, it's precious. No point chasing good water after bad as it were! ;)
