Hi micky,
'Camping Municipal' are the town sites run by the council. They tend to be clean and basic, ie no pool, restaurant etc, but some have.
So you have 4 nights to fill? I assume you'll be heading down via the east of Paris, possibly the A26 (toll). The sites we use going down are Guines (Bien Assise) listed here. That's 15 mins from the tunnel, and expensive. I believe there's a site in Ardres too. But if you want to get a bit of distance, then head for Chalons en Champagne (listed), about 3 hours on the motorway. This is also expensive. After that there's a smashing little site we found last time, it's not come up on the listing yet, called Mery sur Seine, W of the A26 on the D441, that was very cheap and lovely. Troyes also if you prefer a big town. After that, Langres is a lovely town. Camping Navarre (listed) is in the town centre, well worth a visit. There's a couple of sites in Beaune, though we've not used them. Then Macon, that's not come up yet either, but a good site if you can get there not too late as it gets busy with stopovers. Not expensive either.

Hmm, don't know the answer to that, as we only go in April and September, and have never booked a site. Is that a campervan you have? Guines, Chalons, and Macon are huge sites, used a lot for stopovers, so lots of coming and going, so I would think you'd almost always get a pitch early afternoon. Mery is a lot smaller, but then, the pitches aren't marked out, so you can often squeeze in somewhere.
We've always managed to get a space for our not-too-large tent, even in July on the Med, though the sites were full to busting. One site refused us for 1 night, said they only took people for a week. And one site on the Normandy coast in June was very full, the pitch we got was very poor (and so was the campsite!)
If you have an alternative site to head for, you've a second chance if your first choice is full.
