Ok we are about to change our £'s to Euros and wondered how people normally take their spending money with them. Our bank charges high rates for using cards abroad so therefore the alternative is to take all in cash or get prepaid card from travel agent. My OH thinks as it is a campsite cash is the preferred method however i am a little uneasy with carrying that amount in cash. On our last 2 holidays we went long haul and our prepaid cards were accepted everywhere so will that be the same in France?

I opened a Nationwide Flex Account especially for going on holiday.  I can keep adding a bit without missing it throughout the year and no charges for using my debit card in France.

Do you have to pay your salary into these accounts in order to service them? I work for RBS therefore have to bank with them too so couldnt move my salary over.

We use PO and/or Santander Zero credit cards We use one to pay for shopping fuel etc and load the other with some cash before we go and use the to drw euros from ATMs.  There is no foreign loading and loading the card used for cash means no interest charges either.  You also get the commercial exchange rate rather then the tourist one.  We never have more than €200 on us at one time and have found more and moe sites are accepting credit cards.  We do visit one or two sites where a 'discount' is given for cash but they are very few and they usually need to know you as a regular.

I think to open a Nationwide acc. now it has to be your main account. They made the rule because too many were opening acc's. just for hols. The way round it is to open an Esaver with them that needs a current acc to service it, I think. Their debit card is excellent for continental withdrawals. I got charged £83.70p for 100€ withdrawal in France on Thurs, ie the bank rate.

In France you can pay for most things, campsite fees/supermkt/fuel/road tolls by credit card & you can apply for a Post Office credit card which is fee free for € transactions.

Doing this you really only need to keep a float of less than 100€ cash & a couple of withdrawals on your RBS card won't be too bad. I really wouldn't be carrying large sums of cash around. Always tell your credit card provider the dates you will be using your card abroad & provide a contact mobile phone no.

Nationwide is Best.. NO CHARGES. Agree with No large sums for  carriage !

Dont RBS  help their employees?

Dont  forget you can  also cut the cost of stays(campsites) by using Camping Cheques. That means carrying less cash !

You  cud   also  join ASCII and use their site vouchers. Means carrying even less money

If you dont want a second bank account and just want a safe way of carrying money in France with a good exchange rate and no fees then you could try a euro loading card such as Caxtonfx or Fairfx both owned by Newcastle Building Society.

We use PO credit card and our HSBC cards at ATMs. ( Have been with HSBC for years -in fact they were Midland Bank when we started!)

We have the advance account (used to be plus account) so there is no charge for using ATMs abroad or the HSBC credit cards.

You do pay a monthly fee though, but get free travel insurance and breakdown. I still take out Red Pennant Cover for the car and van though!

Have also got the ACSI card, as we are going in June. Last year we saved the cost in 2 nights!

We usually take about £400 worth of euros cash safely walletted (bought some more from the Post Office today: 1.15 euros to the pound, no transaction charge) using the Nationwide debit card to top up cash and the Nationwide credit card for as much as possible: don't forget that credit cards companies share some responsibility along with a vendor for faulty goods or service - if something goes wrong with a hire or a purchase and you've paid by credit card then VISA (or whatever) has a responsibility to reimburse you; not so for cash or debit cards of course.

Security may be important: the wife and I carry a quarter of the cash each and put the rest in our high security bag along with passports &c.. She also carries another credit and another debit card .... just in case!

A final thought, once you have your selected cards packed, leave all your other ones at home, inclduing store cards - you may not suffer financially if you lose them or have them stolen but you'll have a lot of hassle reporting and replacing them!

We have a flex account. We take a couple of other cards in case anything goes wrong. Years ago we just took only one card and the strip/chip died. We were left with not enough money to even buy food, let alone petrol to get home. We had to get our bank to telegraph money to a French bank. It took over a week and we were frantic.
And a couple of years ago OH purse was snatched so we had to cancel the cards. Luckily we had an alternative hidden in the car.
So now we always take more than one card.
