We were at La Manga this winter for a while, it seems to be the sort of place you either love or hate!!!

Bad points include-  It is a massive site, and a lot of the 'locals' pitches have ramshackle tin roofs over strange static sheds, so it looks not appealing. If you use too much electricity you then pay for the extra. The clubhouse on site is a long way from the rally area, so if youre not good on the pins you have to drive down there. The wind can be VERY strong, enough to keep you awake wondering if the storm straps will hold.

Good points include-  There is always something going on and lots of friendly Brits to chat to and share knowledge of good restaurants days out etc. The National Park the other side of the road is beautiful in a rugged sort of way, and you can explore for miles with no crowds. There are a couple of shopping malls within 5 miles or so for the shopaholics. Birdwatchers will find some very interesting birds right near the site. (Sardinian warbler, serin)  The pitches are a fair size, and have all facilities and are gravelled, so rain drains through after a shower.(Don't know about downpours tho). The site and the area is fairly flat, so cycling is not too hard.

Hope you all have a good time there, as we cannot go this year with new pup.

Janet & I lived in the Polaris Mar Menor Golf Resort, Torre Pacheco, for a year in 2005 (20 minutes from camping La Manga), and are planning our first 3 month 'winter in the sun' trip in January 2011. I agree that in the winter 'La Manga' is very quiet, particularly in the area wher Camping La Manga is located. Cartagena is a great place to visit as is Murcia. Cabo de Palos is also great for restaurants. We have decided to split our 3 month trip at 1. Spa Natura Resort, Peniscola (7 nights) 2. La Manga (14 nights) 3.Castillo de Banos, Granada (7 nights) 4.Camping Cabopino, Marbella (33 nights) 5. La Aldea, Huelva (13 nights). This will enable us to check out the local area and extend our knowledge of Southern Spain. We will the see how the weather is and decide where to go next on our way back to blighty.

Anyone doing the same - hope to see you...

hi jayare, its quite common for continentals to have residencies on campsites like what you saw, the tin roof protects tents caravans etc from the extreme heat in summer also the rain in winter. .many will have washing machines etc outside and look like an african tribe area. its quite fun to see the other way people live. i first saw it in the 60,s we used to stay on campsites and spanish would live just about all summer in tents under the galvanise roofs. sit in the shade etc . the sun really messes up caravans and tents .they also put their washing out to dry inside out so the colour doesnt fade while drying. we all have lots to learn . cheers alan.
