I booked online yesterday - a DFDS overnight ferry Newcastle/Holland for us and our caravan for June 2011 (long way ahead due to other necessary domestic arrangements).  Amazed when the company took all the £450 costs from our card immediately and, reading through all the small print in the terms and conditions, we will lose 100% of that if we cancel at any time.  I'm used to paying a deposit and only being liable for 100% within a certain period of travelling.  Am I daft?

I have always paid the short channel crossing companies in full when booking. Same with the tunnel. Not used the longer crossings but I assumed they all operated that way.

LD lines take full payment on booking too even when you book through the Caravan Club (which is what we did) I think its becoming increasingly common, our BA flights to Cyprus in August which we booked last November wanted full payment on booking too.

Looking on the bright side, at least you've got it booked and paid for already instead of having all the holiday costs due nearer the trip.

Thanks folks.  It's just that a year seems a long way away and I'm starting to think 'anything could happen'.  But you're right - it'll seem like a very cheap month in Europe by next year.

It still gets my back up though when they want full payment up front, just think of the interest they must get on all the money people pay miles in advance.

Yes savanne 1.  I agree - seems like sharp practice to me and I was pretty narked when I saw they'd taken all the money right then - a full year ahead.  Had gone as far as looking up my legal rights to a 7-day cooling off period for on-line bookings.  Not sure whether it applies to travel and in any case I'll have to agree this with him-indoors before I do anything rash.  He's in later this afternoon so I can have a good moan about ferry companies

I've had bookings with P&O North sea ferries, and they are happy to change the booking, though I think they charge you an admin fee. You only lose the money if you cancel completely. Same with the tunnel, we turned up 2 days early for 1 trip, and they changed it no problem.

Yes vwalen, I should have read all the (very) small print first but there was no clear  warning that they would take all the dosh a year in advance and that's what exercises me.  They're making quite a profit out of that!  We're used to going Brittany Ferries and haven't had that with them - although perhaps they do it as well now.  Profits all round

i tend to use brittany ferries as i only live 30ml from plymouth and as you say they dont do it. they are very good at letting you change to early or later crossings .

i have no complaint with brittany ferries i think they are very helpfull. i take the santander run in winter and a few 5or 10day crossingsto roscoff in summer.always pleased with them.

cheers alan.

You need to buy your travel insurance now so that you're covered if you do have to cancel. It won't cover all cancellations but it'll cover the main reasons.

We booked a DFDS crossing through the Camping and Caravanning Club and also had to pay the full ferry cost upfront but just a deposit for our Brittany Ferries return trip. As previously mentioned it would be best to get travel insurance now to cover you for cancellation due to illness, accident etc.

Thanks everyone - such sensible advice.  We'll be insuring tomorrow (not on line as it's too early).

Agree with the comments on Brittany Ferries, have always liked them, but getting sick of the drive from Cumbria - M6, Birmingham, M5 - a nightmare!  We're now beginning to prefer staying north of the Blackpool turn-off where the roads get more civilised.  Think we're getting old!!!
