We are considering using a  dongle for internet connections and not  relying on campsites wi-fi, but have been told it is  very very expensive. The one  we used last year cost approx £40 per month. The ISP we used also did not "talk to Virgin Media".  Shame cus  thats all our  services  gone ...

Any help and assistance regarding  charges, connectivity, reliabilty and which company  to use would be gladly appreciated.

Many thanks.

Looked at various Spanish Pay-as-you-go Dongle's when I was at La Manga and the Moviestar Mobile phone network seemed to have the best deal although compared to UK dongles there expensive , also check that the area you are in has good coverage and if you need fast connection speed you will need 3g coverage which unlike the UK seems to be fairly extensive any where there is phone coverage

You certainly don't want to use a UK dongle in Europe as its far too expensive. Why the reluctance to use campsite WiFi? You could try for a local dongle/phone data solution but the Mobile Broadband market in Europe is no where near as competitive as it is in the UK.

We are in Spain at the moment and I use the wifi on sites. To ensure to get a good signal I use a wifi antenna I use the directional type for a better signal I never have a problem getting a good signal.

Just Google " Wifi antennas"for information and places that sells them.

Hope this helps.

Are you meaning that it won't let you use POP3 for e-mail. Funnily enough I don't have that problem with campsite WiFi but do with my Dongle. I tend to go over to webmail when I am away in the van.

wi fi is not safe as I would want to conduct all my banking online and would not trust wi fi to do it.

so how much is it to buy and use a dongle abroad assuming I could get around 1 or 3 gb a month?

thanks for any info in advance. Trish

Trish

Why do you say its not safe? I have been using WiFi on campsites for a few years now and not had a problem. There might be a greater risk using public WiFi in busy areas as for someone to get at your system has to be relatively close to you and on the same system. Also I make sure I have proper internet security. If using a contract dongle abroad Vodafone (as an example) will charge you £10 a day with a 50mb download allowance - not cheap!
