 Hi all we are travelling to the Fontainebleau area going via the east side of Paris. Am i best sticking to tolls or is there a easy way to go avoiding the tolls if possible.

If you are using the N104/A104 around Paris that is toll free. If you are coming from Calais come down to Abberville/Amiens and then the D1017 from Roye to Senlis and either carry on towards Paris or join the A1 until you get to the A104. Its not completely toll free but it avoids some. I always suggest the Michelin Road Atlas of France as its fairly easy to plot a route.

On the way back we sail from Dunkirk at 10am, can anyone recommend a site that is handy for the ferry so we don't need to be up a crack of dawn

For once i have to agree with Tentz i take the autoroutedown to Charles de gaule and then onto the  la Francilienne  around head off to Melun and on to Fontainebleau. There is  some good sites on the doorstep of Dunkerque Gravelines between Calais and Dunkerque use google maps to identify

we stoped here some years ago its  a small site but very friendly

In this instance, I'd also agree with Tentz - go with the toll route!  That part of France (to me at least) is one of the least interesting, and most fraught in terms of hold-ups, traffic, roundabouts, and speed limits.

It's probably one of the few sections that I would gladly pay for!
