I have got a FAIRFX card, best exchange rate and no charges.
Travelex nearly always offer the worst rate, last week most places were offering 1.11 euro-£. FairFX 1.20. Travelex 1.07.

Now to be fair Travelex are offering 1.18. The lower rate relates to their walk up booths in airports.

This was on a ferry where the special deal is freight drivers get 1 or 2 cents per £ more.

I've got the Fairfx card too, so easy to use and top ups can be done on line or via your mobile. Exchange rate 1.20 at moment but changes hourly.

I see that Halifax has now launched a credit card (Clarity) that has no foreign exchange fees anywhere in the world. No charges for cash but interest is charged. I suspect that all banks will soon be shamed into doing this!

Have any of you actually used your FX cards in France/Spain at an ATM? We're looking at a Caxton Card as we had a dollar one when we went to Florida last year. It was good but although there was no charge by Caxton for ATM's, every ATM we went to (including Costco!) charged for withdrawal.
We usually take all cash (ssssh, yes I know!) as we have a safe in our fc, but with the exchange rate being better with the card, I wanted to know if the extra would be effectively be wiped out by ATM charges?

Is that perhaps just a US thing? You can, of course, use ATMs in pubs and the like in UK which charge you for use; I've never seen any of these in France but perhaps all ATMs in USA are like that?

That's what I was wondering. We were using ATM's at actual banks and they still charged. We even tried a couple of different banks just in case it was a particular one that charged. The charges varied from $3 in a disney park (which, tbh, was expected) to just 80c in Costco, but averaged out at about $2 a go .
Just wondered if the ones at banks in France and Spain were likely to be the same? We can get pretty much the same rate as caxton/fairfax at Thomas Crown Exchange so any charges would be noticable in our finances.

I have had a Caxton fx card for 3 years and never been charged by any ATM in France. In the early days Caxton charged 1.50 for an ATM withdrawal but that was scrapped about 18 months ago. I believe that ATM charges in the USA are the norm. A few years ago the banks tried to introduce charges for ATM withdrawals in this country and defended their actions by pointing out that it was standard practice in The States.
