Hi

I am going camping with a roof box and bikes to Italy (1st week Cinque Terre, 2nd week Le Marche) this summer (17th July - 7th August)

Perhaps naively I have taken the google directions from the channel tunnel to the Italian riveria as the basis of my planning (overnight in Troyes) - via the Mont Blanc tunnel.

Having read around a few (mostly caravanning) websites, there seems to be a universal agreement that the MBT should be avoided (queues, expense, twisty roads), most recommend Belgium, Luxembourg, germany, Switerzland - some recommending St Gottards tunnel, others St Bernards tunnel.

Is it really so daft to go via Mont Blanc? If so, I guess I should re-plan <sigh>

thanks

Travelling during high season will be stressful wherever you go, e.g. the French likes to take industrial actions at ports during summer months etc... However, one could reduce the stress level by avoiding peak times during the day.

MBT is expensive, and the rules and regulations can drive people potty.

However, after the big fire a few years ago, they have to put such rules and regulations in place to prevent another major incident.

My late partner and I used it on the return leg of our road trip in my car. Unknown to us at the time, due to road works in Italy (very common in October apparently, so that the roads are good to go during the holiday period), we arrived in the region very late at night, and missed out on the stunning views!

There was no queues, and we went through straight away at about 23:00h!

We had planned to repeat the experience during day time so that we could appreciate the stunning view more, probably by staying overnight near Milan.

Sadly, whoever up there had a weird sense of humour, and took my late partner away before we could realised our plan, nevermind.

There may be other tunnels with stunning views, and I cannot recall the names of the ones I have used, St. Gottards was one I believe, however, MBT will always be a cut above the rest IMHO.

Besides, I love the thrill of driving in France and Italy, far more exciting than sleepy Switzerland IMHO!!!

DK

By far the cheapest route in toll terms would be via Luxembourg & down past Metz, Nancy, Epinal & thru Swiss, all it would cost you is about £23 for a Swiss Vignette which is valid for your return leg as well.

So apart from any tolls in Italy your total return cost is £23. going via the Blanc tunnel the total French toll cost is £174 return.

We 'did' the Mont Blanc tunnel a few years ago now, just for the experience.  We queued a little on the French side, but the views at both ends, are superb.  I imagine we may have been lucky with the timings, and we went a different way back to our campsite, but to me, at the time it was one of those 'don't miss it' places - and to my OH a marvel of engineering!

Hmm that certainly does seem a lot cheaper - but it would mean going on the E35 Milan on Sunday afternoon, is that going to be a blackspot?

Perhaps I am worrying too much, but I need to get to Levanto by 19.00 or I lose my pitch...
