HI,

We're just planning our camping trip to Epernay & Annecy,. and wondered whether anyone knew whether there are lots of ATMs available in these places?

Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to UKCS, Shell:

There are LOADS of ATMs throughout France - anywhere you go - and many supermarkets have them.  It's just as easy to use your cards in France as it is in England.  You can use them just as you would at home, to pay in supermarkets, for fuel, and so on - so you don't need to 'change' money as you used to have to do in the old days.  We only withdraw cash, now, for spending in small shops, markets, and for coffees, snacks, etc - for everything else we just pay with our card, as we would at home.

Mind you, thinking about that, we do have a Nationwide card, which is transaction fee and commission fee free - so we don't pay anything in charges, and we get a better exchange rate than the tourist rate.  I suppose if you were paying a transaction fee on top then it might be different.

The card we use in France is a Mastercard and if you go on the mastercard website it will bring up a map of France and give you a list of ATM's in any area. I have been to Annacy there are plenty of ATM's

We've used ATM's all over France with no problem. Generally we cards for fuel, larger purchases and cash from the hole-in-the-wall. In fact we only ever take whatever Euro's we have left from our last trip and simply get some cash out the first day we are there.

Like Val we've Nationwide cards which give a good rate of exchange with no commission - the only excitement seems to be that in some supermarkets the system recognises that it is not a French Bank Card so proceeds to give instructions in Spanish or Italian!

We didn't have any problems in Eperney getting cash out.

As a side note, we did the Mercier Champagne tour which was very informative.

Good job the numbers are the same in France - check the amount, enter pin and hit the green button. Works every time whatever the language!

There are loads of ATMs in France, even in the smallest villages, but it is also another advantage of a SatNav in being able to show where the nearest ATM is. My one show that there are 49 within a 1.3 mile radius of Annecy.

Ohh... you've just reminded me! Sometimes it does recognise it's not a French card and I'm sure I've always had a choice of languages. The other thing that sometimes happens is that it asks you if you'd like to pay in ££ the answer to this is no. If you click yes you get the exchange rate of the moment which will not be as good as the wholesale rate you'll get if you pay in €€ and let Visa/Mastercard do the exchange later. It's a vile little trick to extract just a few drops more of our hard earned cash.
