Hi all going down to Pin Parasol next weekend and not having driven to far in France before, is it better to rely on, a map, sat nav or the next major town /city in my case Rennes, Nantes then La Roche Sur Yon or a combination.
Does it make it easier to just follow the signs for the towns rather than the numbers on the maps, where i see there is the French ones and the Euro ones.
Thanks Kenny.

We use maps. We have a Satnav but have not bothered with it, its on my wife's PDA. Bear in mind that on main roads, especially autoroutes they sign the major cities which could be miles away!
Eg heading south form Calais they would sign Paris or Lyon. Signs for smaller towns appear later!

I use a old Tom Tom sat nav, never had any problems.Been to several locations in the Vendee region, last couple of years I have been to the Loire region.
I prefer driving in france to the uk, better roads , less traffic and well sign posted.
I also take a map just in case. never had to use it, safes the arguments with the wife.
You do need to be aware of where you are, so work out your route on a map. Road numbers in France are not as distinct as in UK & they change frequently as many N rds are downgraded to D rds. You need to navigate by town names.

I would be interested to know how you get on....we are travelling to Pin Parasol in August from Calais if you happen to be doing the same journey I will be interested in how it all goes for you and the time it takes etc..
Hi Zipster, were travelling from Portsmouth this Friday morning. Travelling down there Thurs evening and stopping off at a campsite called Le Puits in France about 45mins from the port on Friday.Saturday morning travelling down to Le Pin.
Will let you know how we go once were back or if i get a internet connection while there.
We use SatNav and then I follow the route on a map as well. Sometimes I don't like the way the Sat Nav wants to go. It is handy to have a general idea of your route in mind and marked on the map because sometimes you come across a hold up or a diversion that requires a quick decision - something Sat Nav's are not that good at.

Me too!! We're off the last two weeks in august so I'll follow this thread....
Use the Satnav. Programme in La Chapelle Hermier (the village that Pin Parasol is closest to) and you should get there easily. Once you get close to the campsite there are plenty of road signs pointing you in the right direction.
