Hi Patersm1

What sort of "outfit" do you have? The reason I ask is that will decide which roads are accessible to you. I may then be able to advise you further as I have toured in both the Lake Como and Interlaken areas.

Hi again Patersm1

We could still do with a bit more information, eg, size of your car engine, size/weight of your 'van as these sort of info will decide which routes are feasible for you.

Surely it will be easier to pay £24 for the Swiss sticker.

You are ok in Swiss with no vingnette if you stay off the motorways. The specific info you require is to whether it is permitted to tow a caravan over the passes into Italy.
If you do a bit of googling you will find it is.

Hi M

Yes it should be possible to travel from Interlaken to Lake Como without using the Swiss autoroutes.

Sorry if I appeared to be asking lots of questions about but I was just trying to guage suitable suitable route for your outfit. Whilst we have towed from Interlaken to northern Italy several times we have tended to use the motorways.

Whilst I appreciate it is expensive to buy 2 vignettes for the Swiss autoroutes on the other hand the autoroutes do tend to be more direct and with far fewer bends and gradients than the more minor roads so you will be likely to find your fuel costs much higher. You will need to be careful that you don't get diverted or mistakenly turn onto the autoroute as fines for using the autoroues without having the vignettes are steep!!

Our Tom Tom Sat Nav gives the journey from Interlaken to Chiasso (where the following route crosses the border into Italy) as 144 miles on the route below with a journey time of 5 hours 18 minutes or 131 miles/3 hours 9 minutes by motorway. Both journey times are based on a limited speed of 50mph (the Swiss towing speed limit). So there is a BIG DIFFERENCE in journey times!!

Nevertheless based on my experiences and what I have read, and heard from others, here is auggested route from Interlaken to Como. Follow Route 6 along the northern shore of the Brienzersee. The last time I went this way there were a number of rocky outcrops which one had to be careful of but probably less of a problem for you than me (we were towing a 7 metre 'van.)

Then take Route 11 to Innertkirchen and follow Route 11 over the Sustens Pass to Wassen. The CC's "Caravan Europe" says of the Sustens Pass "very scenic and well-guarded road; easy gradients and turns; heavy traffic at weekends. Negotiable by caravans with care but not for the faint hearted." I've not negotiated the Sustens Pass myself.

From Wassen take the road leading to the St Gotthard Pass. From Wassen this road roughly parallels the motorway.

We have towed our previous twin-axle van over the St G Pass and I found it good road and towable. It has series of hairpins to reach a flattish plateau section at the top before descending to Aerolo by another series of hairpins. "Caravan Europe" says of the St G Pass "Modern fairly easy 2-3 lane road. Heavy traffic." We took this route as an alternative to the tunnel when we found it very congested when we arrived the last Friday in July at teatime!!! The Pass road was very quiet with little traffic when used it despite long queues for the tunnel.

From Aerolo the more minor route south parallels the motorway. (We have always used the motorway for this section)   You can then join the Italian Toll motorway just after crossing the border at Chiasso. I would recommend taking the motorway down to Como. I would not recommend turning east at Lugano toward Menaggio as that is not a good road for towing.

I don't know where you are going to on Lake Como but if you are travelling northwards up Lake Como I would strongly recommend the route up the EASTERN side of the lake. It is mainly dual carraigeway whilst the road on the western side is VERY narrow in places and I would not recommend it for towing.

The above route is I believe a good combination for directness and towability although I've not driven all of it.

If you are looking for a campsite on Lake Como I would recommend Camping La Riva at the Lake's northern end. We stayed there for 2 weeks in 2006 and you can read mine and others review here:
http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=7388

I hope this is of some help to you.

Have a super holiday. We love the Interlaken area and Lake Como - you've made good choices.

Regards
Tim

With your outfit, the route via Lugano toward Menaggio is quite do-able.
I have used it in both directions.   The only problem I had with a 'standard' width outfit and 4x4 was a tight bend where a very large coach coming in the opposite direction was stuck on the corner.
HGVs to use that road. (I had told myself not to go that way)
But, I would still stick to the motorways.   The Sfr80 cost will more than pay for itself in time and running costs.   Caravans are prohibited on the Susten Pass anyway.

Enjoy yourself.   Whatever you're doing!!

In response to Rostrevor comments on my route suggestions.

I bow to his personal knowledge of the Lugano to Menaggio road. I think his previous postings on his encounter with one of the views that coloured my opinion of that road. It, also, depends where M is wanting to go on Lake Como. If travelling north from Menaggio I would repeat my earlier warning that the road northwards from Menaggio is very narrow in places, particularly in some of the villages. Even driving solo parked cars made it very tight in places.

I was surprised, however, to read that caravans are prohibited on the Susten Pass as the quote I gave was from the 2009 edition of the Caravan Club's "Caravan Europe" guide. I don't know when Rostrevor's information dates from - if my information is out of date I apologise. I did try "googling" "Susten" pass but, although I got some lovely pictures and personal accounts which were very worth looking at, I could not find anything "official" on whether there IS a prohibition of Caravans.

To conclude - as I said in my previous post I strongly agree with Rostrevor's comment that the buying the motorway vignettes and using the motorways would probably be an easier and perhaps, given the extra distance, vehicle wear and fuel costs, even CHEAPER option.

The Swiss have put a lot of time and effort into building their comprehensive motorway system in a very challenging geographical area. The resulting motorways are EXCELLENT.

Regards
Tim
