In response to Rostrevor comments on my route suggestions.
I bow to his personal knowledge of the Lugano to Menaggio road. I think his previous postings on his encounter with one of the views that coloured my opinion of that road. It, also, depends where M is wanting to go on Lake Como. If travelling north from Menaggio I would repeat my earlier warning that the road northwards from Menaggio is very narrow in places, particularly in some of the villages. Even driving solo parked cars made it very tight in places.
I was surprised, however, to read that caravans are prohibited on the Susten Pass as the quote I gave was from the 2009 edition of the Caravan Club's "Caravan Europe" guide. I don't know when Rostrevor's information dates from - if my information is out of date I apologise. I did try "googling" "Susten" pass but, although I got some lovely pictures and personal accounts which were very worth looking at, I could not find anything "official" on whether there IS a prohibition of Caravans.
To conclude - as I said in my previous post I strongly agree with Rostrevor's comment that the buying the motorway vignettes and using the motorways would probably be an easier and perhaps, given the extra distance, vehicle wear and fuel costs, even CHEAPER option.
The Swiss have put a lot of time and effort into building their comprehensive motorway system in a very challenging geographical area. The resulting motorways are EXCELLENT.
