Good Afternoon

I'm planning next years holiday already, can anybody recomend a campsite close to the Palace of Versailles or one that has a public transport link close by.

Regards lpp2

There's the Huttopia site at Versailles - but I haven't stayed there personally.  We have stayed at two other Huttopia sites, at Rambouillet and at Senonches, and liked them both - but they are not to everyone's taste.

We visited Versailles whilst staying at Camping International at Maisons Lafitte (but I wouldn't recommend that site).

We're staying at Huttopia Versailles in August so I can let you know our opinion later. I get the feeling that their sites may be a little "different" but the reviews seem ok and the station is just up the road for trips into Paris.  Some reviews say that you can walk to Versailles in about 30mins or it's one stop down on the train. You can also buy tickets online to save time in the queues, under 26 can go free with ID on standard ticket days (not special events)

Val, in your opinion, what is it that makes them "not to everyones taste" just curious...

We've stayed at Huttopia at Rambouillet and at Senonches - and loved them both, but we did meet people who thought they were 'dreadful' because of the pitches.  A lot of the pitches are in the forest - and so are very 'rustic' - just forest floor, cleared for the most part, but access is not straightforward on to some pitches - and they're not gravelled, or tidied up.

The large paddock area at Senonches is open, and you pitch where you want, facing any direction you want - but again we met people who didn't like the idea and liked fixed, 'regular', pitches.  Several Brits all parked up a nice neat row around the perimeter road, backs to the fence, jockey wheel pointed inwards, Caravan Club style, where we  and most of the French people there 'plonked' in a lovely sunny position next to the picnic tables in the  best position to make a quick exit the following morning!

They also have 'eco' swimming pools - which don't use chemicals - and so the water quality can be very variable, depending on various things such as the weather, so the pools can close at short notice if the tests don't come up to scratch.

Thanks for that Val.

The pool being out of action would be a bit of a pain but I think we can live with uneven, random pitches - it sounds like scout camp.  Wouldn't normally stay anywhere with quite so many trees as we like sunny pitches...but for a few days the shade might be welcome.  At least OH won't be moaning about hardstandings that make it look like a carpark....even though they are very useful in bad weather.
