Hide them in't car. If its a modern car its the most secure place you have. A thief with the right contacts can sell a UK passport for £400, so worth stealing. Occassionally with credit card transactions, supermkt. etc, you will be asked to show your passport but its got much rarer since chip&pin.
I don't know if campsites have safes but if you want to stop & not pay upfront, many will want to retain your passport so you don't do a runner.

I got this. Takes my Tomtom, iPod, and passports. I prefer to leave my passport in the car as I have my driving licence on me when out and about. Some cars have hidden compartments in them, you can put your passports etc in a sealed bag or box and hide them in there.
Some cars that have rear seats that fold up (I won't say which ones) have some natty hidey holes. The theif would have to know where they were and would have some effort in moving seats around. Ok, if he/she is prepared to do this, then you'll not stop them by any means but as most thefts are quick opportunistic ones, you'll be fine to hide them away like this. Just make sure your car keys are hidden away!
I carry mine on me (not in a bag) all the time, and find cargo pants with lots of pockets are god-send when travelling!

All the campsites I've ever stayed in in France and Spain have had safety deposit boxes available for hire in reception. Not cheap to hire though, so we fitted a safe into both our old TT and now our new pathfinder. I suppose smaller sites may not have them though, you'd have to check.
I make a copy of passport & pet passports to carry in my rucksack/ bag with a copy of the campsite location. Then I put the real things in the footwell in my Meriva with car documents & travel insurance docs. There is a small storage compartment in front of the rear seats which is covered by the carpet. Then no risk of losing the real things.
Then all the docs are reasonably handy at all times and I can show a temporary document if needed. I started this when -many many years ago the campsite used to hold passports if no camping carnet- now they just copy the passport.
