Hi - last year we undertook a rather ambitious journey of touring most of France in 2 weeks. Needless to say we didn't make all of it but we did see a great deal of the east and the south.

This year we're hoping to camp somewhere (maybe 2 locations)on the west coast of France. We don't mind driving a fair bit south so that gives us plenty of scope.

Does anyone have any recommendations of places to visit/decent camp sites?

We like quieter sites (no euro discos at 2am please), old towns, quiet beaches (if they exist) and plenty of good food and wine.

We'll be going for the last 2 weeks in August.

Any ideas/recommendations?

Thanks

Hi

If you don't mind the drive I can recommend the Arcachon basin nr Bordeaux. Unfortunately I would not recommend the campsite we were on (Les Goelands - Andernos Les Bains) as it was a bit rundown, but there are plenty in the area and there is lots to see and do.

Thanks - Bordeaux is very do-able. We'll be stopping the first night 3 hours west of Calais so don't mind an early start the next day and possibly 4-5 hour drive - that should get us near that area.

Any other suggestions?

Also - last year we visited Provence and the Massif Central - loved the landscapes around those areas. What are the best places to go in the West for great scenery?

Personally I'd head for the area around Royan, nice beaches and plenty to see and do in the area.

If you do go to Archachon , which is beautiful there is an amazing camp-site called "Camping Panorama". It's just between the Dune Du la Pyla and Biscaross. There are many camp-sites on the route but from my experience this is the best ( we have been 3 time along with many friends who all love it) The lake a Biscaross is beautiful. It's a fantastic area with lots to do and lovely beaches . Have a fantastic time where ever you go

Arcachon is lovely and also the area around Lac Sanguinet. We stayed near Navarosse a few years ago at Camping Les Ecureuils, unfortunatley this small site is situated in a lively area and we were regularly kept awake by discos/late-night revellers.

We much prefer Le Logis de Breuil, SW not far from Royan, there are lots of threads on this site. If you need any info just ask.

We did the west coast in a lot of depth last year. I am loathe to tell you where we went as it was lovely and want to keep the crowds away!!

The beaches north of Moliets which are Espacier, Cap d'lhomy and Contis Plage are great. We stayed at St Julien en Born in a muncipal ...great. friendly and cheap but there are other sites in the area.

St Julien is approx 4 miles from the beach so is quieter but you should be able to get somewhere without reservation.

We thought Biscarrosse and Messanges were a bit 'Butlinesque' for us and preferred the more natural sea fronts

Ile de Re - we're going to camping Interlude at Bois Plage en Re last week in August.

Fairly busy and some animations but no Euro Disco. Direct access to beach - walk quarter of a mile in either direction and you'll have it pretty much to yourself. Fab sunsets.

Camp restaurant does a mean dozen oysters - takeaway poulet frites pretty good. Site very handy for a visit to the island Cave Co-operative - a 10 min walk.

Towns on the island are old and quite charming. Great cycle routes round the island. Handy for a day trip to La Rochelle.

hello,

we have travelled for a few years and have found that the municiple sites are quite good and v cheap. oogle maps will bring up a town and local campsites if you ask it. that can come up with some gems.

OK - Great help guys - we're thinking we might do 2 locations - a week in each. We could start with a week camping in (or near) Ile de Re and then, for the second week, we head south towards St Julien en Born and camp on the coast around there.

How does that sound?

How about the Ile d'Oleron for a few days? Quite a different feel to the Landes (south of Bordeaux) it's very French, and will be quieter after 15th August. The bridge is free BTW.
