Some supermarkets in the larger towns may be open on Sunday morning, but you would be well advised to take sufficient food to tide you over the weekend. Don't forget the sanctity of the French lunch hour, go to the supermarlet too late in the morning and you will have to wait until 2.30 pm! Some towns might have a Sunday morning food marlet, but don't bank on it. I don't know who thought all those years ago when Sunday opening started that it was a "Continental" custom. In my experience most shops in France are not only closed on a Sunday and some even close on Mondays also. Good luck with your holiday n France, I returned last Wednesday after a two week break and can't wait to get back in September.
The excellent big, edge of town supermarkets are closed from late (8/9pm) Saturday until Monday morning. In tourist areas you may find a small tourist supermarket open on Sunday morning, but normally you can rely on the local boulangerie for bread/cakes.
The big supermarkets are the best places to buy petrol (the difference can be quite large), so I'd advise getting petrol and a couple of days bits at a large town on the way to your destination. I recommmend the E Leclerc chain - you could do a search on google to find one on your way.

More and more chain supermarkets are opening on a Sunday morning in not just the tourist areas.
Really? I'm not sure if I'm happy about that ... obviously it's incredibly annoying not being able to buy stuff at 'normal' times, but you gotta love the French attitude to working hours.
We were in Vallon Pont D'Arc (Ardeche) last year and one of the main restaurants in town - I hasten to add, a tourist town - had a note on the door: "Closed for August".
