so a hgv can carry 29ton of goods and a transit type van 1.5ton, which means you would need 19 transits to match what a artic can take, short or long this is not energy efficient, there is so much that cant be carried by small truck or vans its unbeleaveable , the rail was shut down as it didnt make enough money, and if you look at the cost of rail travel now it would cost alot of money to ship it this way, you would also need to build alot of hubs to distrubute all these goods.
there are far to many hgv's on the road now that carry so much waste of time stuff companies send small loads in large lorries just so they can make more money on the return loads. im sorry but i dont think rail is a good alternative and would never work, with or with out the good old days.
