Assuming you mean Rep Ireland and not N. Ireland, I'd be amazed if it was any different to the UK. Certainly I know of no-one who brings anything different when crossing the border.
Thats the point though - I don't think it is any different in Rep Ireland. N. Ireland is obviously the same as the rest of the UK. As for travel insurance, thats a personal choice, theres no legal requirement that I know of.

Lots of MONEY,Rain Coats,Umbrella, and more Money, other than that there is NO legal requirment for warning triangles, spare bulbs or high viz vests. The only legal requirment is car insurance and a driving licence to drive the vehicle.
As above, Rules of the Road (Irish equivalent of the Highway Code), advises the equipment which you'd normally take to the Continent - beam benders excepted of course! See here.
Check your recovery insurance applies (or can be extended) to cover ROI.
Personal (medical) insurance might be advisable.
Take your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) (was E111) you may be asked for it. Either way you should get free treatment in hospitals (hopefully not required) but this does not apply to dental treatment. There is no NHS or equivalent in the Republic.
have just applied for the ehic card, didnt know about that one and I didnt realise you needed high vis jackets there either nor triangles, seems we have to go shopping before we go? and get the travel insurance sorted, thanks for all the replies folks.

Hopefully you won't need them - according to my earlier link, they're not compulsory - "We advise motorists that it would be useful to have the following items available for use in your vehicle: * A first aid kit * A fire extinguisher * At least 2 high-vis vests or jackets(fluorescent and reflective) * 2 red warning triangles The above are examples of items that might be useful in an emergency. You might choose to carry other items that you feel might be helpful." - but I'd recommend them for driving in Britain or Ireland.
