Hi, just wondering if anyone can help with any route planning suggestions please - we are heading to Lake Garda via Germany and Austria next week and would love to hear about the routes people have taken?  And also stoppovers and campsites along the way?  We are travelling with two young children so we are not planning on driving more than 200 - 250 miles a day.  Many thanks, Michelle

Hi, we travelled this route last year. We sailed to Amsterdam so the first part of the route will be different if you're sailing to a different port. We travelled via Our first stop was at Camping Laacher See which is just off J34 of the A61 north of Koblenz. This was a lovely site beside a lake.

We continued through Germany via Mainz, onto the A5 and then took the A8 at Karlsruhe via Stuttgart stopping at Camping Waldpark, Hohenstadt (J60).

Take the A7 at Ulm and continue on this road via Kempten, Fussen and Reutte and then the Fern Pass to Imst. Our last stop was Camping Eichenwald at Stams just west of Innsbruck.

Then it's the A13 from Innsbruck which becomes the A22 in Italy. This will take you all the way to Lake Garda.

All the sites we stopped at are in the ACSI book and on their website.

Hope this helps.

That was the route and the campsites we took last year on the way back from Italy. Don't recall any tunnels although when the motorway is complete on th German side of the Fern Pass I think there will be a tunnel there.

There are only a few very short tunnels. Nothing significant.

Hi Michelle

Dont know if you'll see this but we just came back from Lake Garda on sunday. We also drove from amsterdam via germany and austria on the way down we stopped at bruhle (spelling) just a few miles off motorway and had a nice little lake for kids to swim in. On the way back up we stopped at Stuttgart at camping stuttgart just few mins off the a or b 10 and just along from mercedes museum which is sign posted this was a nice little site again ideal for a stop over. When we got to austria we stayed at natters see campsite for 3 days again just off motorway and the best toilet block i have ever seen. Kids showers had thunder and lighting in them so when shower is on noise and light starts i was to big to have a go lol also have tv's above the sink in kids toilet.

From there we took the toll to lake garda we paid 8euro in austria and 11 in italy thats for a motorhome 6.2m long we where told by a local in austria that the money we spend on tolls we will save on fuel as the non toll road is a lot longer and slower.

Hope you have a good time and any questions just ask i will try and answer before you leave

Gerry

Hi Gerry,

Thanks very much.  Remember staying at Nattersee many years ago - so we will try and have a revisit now.  Cheers, Michelle, PS How was the weather in Lake Garda when you left?

Hi

It was very hot for the nine days we where there some days in the low 40's had a couple of storms but just at night and next days was lovely. Most of the time it was in the mid 30's so take the sun cream with you. We stayed at camping san francesco in the south and loved it.

Have a good hol

Gerry
