We are off to Mellionnec near Rostrenen in Brittany, we will be travelling from Calais. Can anyone tell me the estimated cost the total of the tolls will be?

Best place to look is a site called "viamichelin". They have options where you can put in whether you are towing and will also find an alternative route if you want to avoid tolls. They will calculate fuel and toll costs for you.

Don't forget, if you're towing a caravan, to select 'with caravan' from the 'Options' in order that the website can calculate the correct tolls.

One newcomer to this (or another forum) posted that the toll had cost quite a lot more than he'd been quoted - and obviously hadn't realised that caravans are charged as a Class II vehicle, with an increased toll.  For example, the route quoted above as 23.80 is 34.80 if you're towing a caravan.

We've started using non-toll roads over recent years, not being in a rush to get anywhere, and find that towing your speed is not significantly reduced overall.  We still manage to get down to the Mediterranean from the north with just one overnight stop, using a non-toll (or minimal toll, perhaps 2 or 3 euros) route.  We also benefit from being able to buy our fuel 'off autoroute' and save perhaps 20 cents a litre, which for a fill-up can also be quite a saving.

I've just had a look at viamichelin, and our last journey from Calais down to Grau d'Agde would have cost us 97.10 euros in tolls if we'd used the Michelin recommended route, and uses a calculated 75 litres of fuel at 1.30 per litre.  We actually paid no tolls, not even for the Millau viaduct, and our 75 litres of fuel would cost not more than 1.14 euros/litre (supermarket prices at the time, and some down to 1.09) so overall we saved about £12 on fuel and £90 in tolls!  For us, on a pension, that's a huge saving - and both ways is more than we spent on campsite fees for a three week holiday!

I have just looked in my French road map and the only toll motorways you will need are the A16 between Boulogne and Rouien and the A13 between Rouen and Caen. the rest of the motorways towards brittany are toll free as far as I can see. Some of the N roads are upgraded to have motorway characteristics, ie dual carrageway etc. I usually use motorways when going to a place and am a bit more relaxed when coming home, but i think they are essential in Northern France especially towards and around Rouen. Have a wonderful holiday, I have to wait to go to France again until september Boo Hoo!!!

French Autoroutes are superb IMHO. stress free travel, set cruise control and go!

Great for getting to the area you want. If time is no object (when we retire!) we will use the RNs!!!

i find route nationale roads almost as good as motorways . i drive hgv,s abroad and find its actually quicker to not use motorways  specially if towing. i certainly try my hardest not touse them when in my own vehicle .mind i use a mini artic as my camper ,the cost would be horrific. any way is a couple of hours that important. enjoy the travelling its part of your trip. cheers alan.

I fully understand some people's reasons for avoiding the toll roads, but I think you may have contradicted yourself there.

I'm almost tempted to agree with vwalan because there are some RN's where HGVs are banned from the outside lane from morning to night. The A roads are great however and my holiday starts when I get there. It isn't so amazing being stuck behind an overtaking lorry driving on the limiter with a differential speed of 1 mph. It's what makes UK dual carriageways purgatory.
