How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
We have bought ice blocks in France before, they are great as you can chip some off to put in your drinks and keep your coolbox cooler for longer than ice packs, just remember to seal them well in a strong polybag (we didn't the first time and a lesson learned hard)

I have three sides, left, right and wrong - which one are you on?
I wouldn't rely on them having bags of ice in the supermarkets. In our experience it was often sold out, and, in one place in Cognac a few years back they gave us some of the fish counter (what a whiff!), as they didn't sell it at all, and seemed to think that my husband's 'do you sell ice' an outlandish question!
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
We've never had problems buying ice cubes in supermarkets. Even some of the smaller supermarkets sometimes have it - as did a campsite shop where we stayed this year!
