We didn't realise you weigh your fruit and veg first and the checkout assistant was trying to explain but we didn't understand. The lady behind us in the queue then translated and told us we shouldn't come to France if we couldn't speak french. That tainted the holiday and it's taken years for me to consider going back. I did however have great holidays as a child and think I could have some more...

sounds a reasonable criticism to me,
also don't understand why the next post dismisses the whole of France because Parisians are rude
would you also base your assessment of the UK by London?

in Supermarkets - as in many other situations - first watch and learn from others, you would have seen them weighing the loose produce, otherwise buy the pre-packed stuff - or go to the markets and point and smile a lot

go back - enjoy - and try to speak at least a little bit of the language - and throw in a few Bonjours and s'il vous plaits

we tend to stick to France and Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark and Netherlands - purely because of distances involved - we usually go for about 3 weeks only,
can't get as far as Spain, and Portugal and Italy would take us months the way we travel

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!

I have to say that I don't think it was a reasonable criticism. I do speak French and we didn't weigh up the first time we went to the supermarket as it's so different from the UK and we are in the EU so you would think it was all nearly the same.

France is very dependent on tourism. I wouldn't dream of being rude to anyone and especially not to a stranger in my country.

To Greenhill: please don't let that horrible experience put you off. I have to say that the further you get away from the ports and Paris the friendlier the people seem to be.

It's all very well people saying learn "please" and "thank you" which I agree with, but it's different when someone is trying to tell you how to do something a bit complicated.
