Looking at Italy for next year, any suggestions on which coast is the better for caravanning? the Med or the Adriatic? Not too bothered about the lakes, want to do the coast really?

We've just spent 2 weeks camping at Union Lido, near Venice on the Adriatic coast. Absolutely fantastic, and would recommend it to anyone. Weather was 29/30 degrees most days, but also plenty of shade on your pitch, as plenty of trees.

We got bitten to death at our campsite near Venice - so we only stayed 2 nights. Think we might just have been unlucky though as it had been raining, and rained while we were there so presumably thats what caused all the mozzies. Me, son and hubby had 30+ bites each!

We stayed at nice site in La Spezia though - Camping River.

Biggest problem we had in Italy though was pitch size - even with a tent just 5m x 3m the pitches were way too small, at Camping River you had to leave your car in the parking lot, and in Venice we could only just get the tent and car on the pitch, no room for a table or chairs so if you are going I would double check the pitch size you are offered.

A couple of years ago we spent a few days at Happy Camping, Bellaria, just north of Rimini.  It was November, so rather bleak and deserted, but it looked as though the high-season facilities would be good, especially for families.  However, it's not what you'd call a scenic coast, just miles and miles of sand backed by hotels, totally lacking in character.  The hinterland was featureless fen.  However it would be fine if  you just want sea, sun and sand.   We also stayed on the north west coast, the Riviera dei Fiori, at San Remo.  This was much prettier, but not as sandy.

My aunt lives in Italy and so over the years have spent lots of holidays there. I've never camped but stayed in villas - the best seaside resort we went to was called Lido delle Nazioni. It was a great place and there are campsites there - Eurocamp use one called Tahiti, that looks quite nice.
I love France but it's a habit. This has made me think!!
Good luck!

Ruth
