Does anyone know if there is much difference between the cost of diesel between filling stations in N.France and S.Belgium? I know Luxemburg is 'traditionally' much cheaper for fuel but that is out of the way.
My thoughts are, if we caight the Norfolk line ferry to Dunkirk, we would be a stones throw from Belgium. We could travel on the E42/A25 as far as Lille, before turning South. On the map, Armentiere looks like it's half in France and half in Belgium. Just wondered if this would be a good (cheap) place to fill up before heading South to Reims and Chalon.
Never been this way before, and I suspect the fuel prices might even out a little towards the borders. Don't know what the roads are like either, but a pound saved here is a pound more to spend eventually in Frejus!!

Dont know about Belgium. the supermarkets were much cheaper for fuel rather than service stations, we were paying 1.08 euro for diesel at supermarket and about 1.28 euro at service station.
No problem here, on A25 exit 13, turn left (dir Popperinge)go for approx 3kms and you will see a Q8 and a Shell garage next door.
On Monday they were 1.09.9 but they do tend to change near daily. The Garages do close but have automatic 24/7 facilities that accept uk credit cards with no problems.
The difference in price Belguim/France is not great enough to warrant a detour. If you want cheap fuel off the A25 before Lille go off at J10 at the far end of Bailleul, there is a LeClercs you can see as you come off at junction, 24/24 pumps that take UK cards. Easy access for caravans.

Thanks for that info. folks. I thought it wouldn't be much difference between Belgium & N. France. 1.099 is about 92p anyway, so that's not bad. Will keep all that info. for next time.
Not sure what the current situation is but a couple of years ago we stayed in France near the Belgium border and it was a bit cheaper to buy diesel in Belgium.

belgium cheaper lux certainly cheaper but is it worth the detour to go through the benelux countries just for cheap fuel wherever you buy the stuff in france it is going to be cheaper than in the uk so why bother even when I had to buy on the motorway because of a very long drive I smiled when th plastic came out and remember the euro is dropping by the day
Thats why I use the garages I mentioned above, about 3 mins from autoroute. There can be a huge difference in price, In France the average supermarket price is around 1.13.9 the average garage price been around 1.20.9.. In Belgium the average pump price is around 1.13.9.
If you dock at Dunkerque then take the road out of the port, at the junction for the motorway go straight across, heading for St Omer, and fill up at the Carrefour supermarket (nearest to Chateau Gandspette at Eperlecques - roundabout and signposted Watten) where diesel on Monday was 109.5 cents. You can then take the St Omer bypass, and join the autoroute (A26) to the south of St Omer. No detours, and good easy access fuel.
By the way the new Michelin 2010 France Atlas has fuel stations marked in blue on the N roads - and going through France we checked out some of them. They all seemed to be 'cheap' (ie supermarket or similar 24/24hr fuel stations) - and none of them we tried were inaccessible to car and caravan combinations, though one was just a little tight around the chicane!

We have just returned from France and Belgium on Saturday 4th September and the prices were much the same, as already stated, supermarkets were about £1.05 and service stations about £1.20. Just do not be tempted to go into Germany £1.48 and we even saw £1.52 could not belive it, luckily we were just on the border of France and drove a couple of miles and filled up much cheaper.

Hi,
We have just returned from France and Belgium on Saturday 4th September and the prices were much the same, as already stated, supermarkets were about £1.05 and service stations about £1.20. Just do not be tempted to go into Germany £1.48 and we even saw £1.52 could not belive it, luckily we were just on the border of France and drove a couple of miles and filled up much cheaper.
Hope this helps.
Just to make things clearer to people I assume the prices above should be Euro's not £.
