Thanks again for all the input so far.
I've actually had Cool Camping France on my Christmas list before - my mum obviously doesn't like the look of it! I'll add Le Guide Officiel and ASCI card as well and maybe she will get the hint that I like camping books 
Bordeaux/Bergerac might well work for the vineyards, esp. if we go for the Dordogne. I do think the camping cheque suggestions and not needing to book sound like a plan - exciting! Interesting point about the hotel as well - may well look into that altohugh I guess if we can do the discounts then it can't get that much cheaper and it seems that if we can get in last couple of weeks August things should still be open...
Does anyone know if there are 2 campsites called l'Ardecheois in the obvious area, BTW?
