we've been driving downto the south for about 5 years now.We normally get a late mid-week ferry (dover-calais) as they are cheaper. all the ferry companies charge higher rate out fri/sat-inbound sat/sun. We go e.g. thurs 23.30 and there is a motorhome/caravan parking area inside calais port area.which is secure. get up in the morning and push off. that way you've had a good kip and you have a full day ahead of you .We go troyes/ reims/dijon autoroute. at Macon halfway betweendijon and Lyon there is a BP truck stop. Fillup there it is loads cheaper. Don't stay overnight at the aire restplaces try and use one of the french municipal campsitestoilets/showers and elec hook up for about £5there great. We usually take 3 days there and 2 back over 3 week holiday take it easy and enjoy
