can anyone offer a good route. last year we lost our caravan just outside perpignan a9, between narbonne, wind took it. so very nervous of that route. someone suggested santander to madrid malaga route. is it safe with caravan. and what route best to take.

also any ideas of good stop over sites between.

you could just take the 611 to palencia ,620 to valladolid ,601 tomadrid ,then head to toledo,or better still get the then the e05 to bailen then the e902 to granada .then drop to motril and turn right and follow the coast. may not be a good idea to go burgos it very steep .i do it in my truck i like the view ,i take the 623 to burgos thern the e05 .the scenary is spectacular but you have to keep looking back, it is steep. .if you do take the steep road when it starts to flatten out there is a big layby on the right good for overnighting it also has fresh drinking water. be careful if coming back this way stop at the top and use low gears go very slow .brake fade is very often the problem . just go very slow and enjoy the view its to die for. also if you have time turn off at burgos and head towards soria keep eyes open for the cacon delrio lobos .it was featured in mmm. a while ago very nice big canyon. lots parking and well worth a days visit. cheers alan. ps. i dont use campsites always free camp. even with my 5er.

hi alan, thanks for that, dont think we will take the steep roads though, will look up those routes you suggested.  we did go by car on the last part of trip down to malaga and that was hairraising goingover granada, sat nat took us that way. would love the idea of freecamp but have 5 kids so need somewhere for them to chill (and myself after last year)

thanks again. kaz.

there are various routes looking at a map to the west of madrid . all very good . if you do go to the canyon the kids will love it there is a path that follows the canyon its like a little grand canyon. lots for them to investigate. i had 2 kids  and they never got bored stopped by rivers or resevoirs , bottom of hills like small mountains .in the centre of spain free caming rules .its possible to just about stop anywhere. of course depends on time of year as it gets very snowy in winter. i say dont be in a rush .you could take weeks to get there and turn round and take weeks the way back. we take six on the way down and very often 6weeks to come back. its a big country with lots to see. you can zig and zag . inland is alot different to the coast. have you tried cantarbria and asturia its nice there as well . totally different o the med. again lots of free camping spots .galecia is also nice.  have fun .cheers alan.
