think you will find there is loads of caravan sites all the way down and back up the other side and along the algarve. gets a bit quiet up the west coast of portugal but lots free camp with caravans . we spent alot of time last year witrh a french couple with car and caravan. it all depends if you want to stay put or move around. thousands just drift about. we pass loads of open campsites but as we dont use them cant say what they are like but think you will find many open. have an adventure . what you save on campsite fee,s pays for the fuel to go on a mystery tour. you only live once . be a devil try it . you can stay most places in spain for one night and move . or so i get told by the guardia. they count mine as a caravan, but near malaga and pedro de alcantera they just leave you alone as long as your not right on the coast road . get back one road and you are ok. we very often are a small group of up to 5 trucks and never get a problem finding somewhere to stop. cheers alan.
