I'll be watching this thread with interest too, we are planning a trip to Lake Garda, we want to stay on one of the sites in the eastern side of the lake, we used to walk past them and now we might get to stay there.
Just done a quick search for "Garda" and found 44 other threads here, some of which may hopefully be of interest to the OP, but they all appear to be about an Italian lake!
Looks as if we'll have to start another thread if we want to discuss An Garda Siochána!
Hi, I have done this drive many times. Through (CH) Basel and then through the Gotthard tunnel or throght France and through the Mont Blanc tunnel. I prefer France because the roads are quieter and the (CH) route is very stop start although the veiws are great. Try to aviod the roads around Garda at the weekend because they can be very busy and then dont give much space to caravans. Bella Italia Peschiera is a nice big campsite and its right off the A6 motorway, on the east side there sites like SanVito Lazise.
We returned from Italy via France last Easter, tolls were around€200 inc Frejus tunnell, going we went - Belgium, Germany(Munich) Austria - Brenner Pass down to Garda - much much cheaper.

Is it true that the speed limit in Germany is now 50mph?
Yes that is regular speed limit in quite a few countries including Austria and Italy. Not that I am encouringing anyone to break the law but the concensus is that the police generally turn a blind eye to those that travel at the same speed as the trucks! You can qualify for a higher speed limit of 100kph but you need a Tempo 100 test which requires a sort of MOT on the caravan. Whilst most newish UK caravans would pass, olders ones without shock absorbers would not. I have towed many times in Germany and never found the speed limit particularly limiting, also improves economy!
