I'm thinking of driving to Greece next June and would like to know about any potential difficulties of driving through the Balkans. Specifically, has anyone had problems with robberies or damage to their vehicles and what is the quality of the roads like generally?

If I was doing that trip I would go to Ancona and take the ferry to Patras. You can take the ferry to Igoumenitsa but this means driving thru one of the main junctions coming down from Macedonia. Last time I did that run ithe place was full of the dregs of humanity, Druggies, tarts you name it and it was there
The Patras run gives you a nice sea cruise down the Adriatic and you can generally sleep in your van; some of the ferrys even have electric hook-ups now.
Have a look on www.wildcamping.co.uk I believe that some of the people on there have doen that run recently
Ive done that run a few times, once through the then Yogoslavia around Albania by road, once using the old Yogoslave ferries around Albania (be great if they made a comeback) and once using a ferry to Igoumenista from Southern Italy. If I was to do it again i would use the latter option, all in all the most convenient and easy and not to expensive.
I was thinking about the drive to Brindisi, then ferry to Ingoumaitsa, is this an OK route? Starting point would be Santander/Bilbao, the through southern France, and down/up each side of Italy.
I would be wary of driving thru Bosnia and also Serbia. There is still a lot of semi-open hostility towards Brits there. You could drive down thru Romania/Bulgaria if you wanted to although I personally would not want to do that.
I have used Anek ferries to Patras before now and found the service to be very good
