I've never found the Ferry Price Comparison websites much good at finding cheap deals, either, particularly if you have a caravan.  I think it's a much better bet to check with the Caravan Club, or the Camping and Caravanning Club, if you're a member, then with organisations specialising in camping holidays such as Camping Cheques, and also with the ferry companies themselves.

For about twelve years we booked through the Caravan Club, or with Camping Cheques, and for the last couple of years directly with Norfolk Lines, using their promotional codes, which are available at the time of the caravan shows and almost always shared on here as quickly as they appear.

I would never rely on 'Cheap Ferry Deals Direct' or similar without checking elsewhere for exactly the same dates/times/facilities.

I have only checked dorectferries .com for the Dover - Calais/Dunkirk routes and have never found their prices competative and therefore have never booked through them.  Don't know about other routes though, but I wouldn't imagine they could much better.

This year we used NL in July, for Car+Trailer Dover-Dunkerque £58 return using the TEF04 Promo code that Val mentions, using the same code and got the £58 deal again for Car+Caravan for our 2011 end of May trip to the South of France.

I think the general consensus is that, even with the extra travelling costs, it still works out cheaper to go on Norfolk Lines Dover - Dunkirk route, or one of the other Dover based crossings.
The longer, western, ferry routes only offer a time saving & are more for convenience, & those who can afford that extra convenience.
People on tight budgets all tend to go for the Dover crossings. As far as I'm aware.
