Yes, - but!! Our destination is the overnight stop and so is part of our holiday. We very rarely think of it as being just somewhere to stay until we move on to somewhere else. We have always tried to stay at least two nights at a site, so that we have at least one day to have a look around at where we are staying. We have stayed at the municipal site at Chalon-en-Champagne as we have been moving further south. It's worth spending at least a couple of nights here - go to one of the champagne caves at Epernay on the day in between. We have also stayed at Camping Bregoux at Aubignan, just outside Carpentras - spend time to drive up Mont Ventoux. If you are looking for a site to stop overnight on the way to somewhere else, it really depends on your ulimate destination, if you are after recommendations. We generally tend to avoid stopping at motorway aires.
Theres no problem finding a campsite for an overnight stop in France if you are going in the spring/summer. Once you know your route & an area you might want to stop, post up on here & somebody will help you.
Theres no need to book an overnight stop but if you are travelling on a Saturday Jul/Aug its best to find a stop by about 5pm.
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
yes every year since 1983 no problem at all masses of sites are seemingly one nighters especially if they are near the A or old N roads phone up beforehand just to check but if you get there mid pm there is generally no problem at all with staying the latecomers are often disappointed
We have stopped at booked sites without any difficulty but for total flexibility just use the Aires on the motorways, most of which are well off the road and allow you to get your head down.
I know this is frowned upon and considered risky in terms of crime etc., however we do it every year to and from Spain and we have never had any problems whatsoever and we have spoken to many others who do/have done the same.
we are looking for a site 2 - 3 hours from calais as we are towing a caravan, and the time we think we will arrive in france is about 15.00 so we dont want to drive too far, but still want to break our journey south.
We have been travelling through France for over 10 years with our caravan.
If we want a quick stop we stop on the autoroute aires (services). These are much more frequent in France than on UK motorways. Many people think that is dangerous because of the danger of being robbed but we have never had any problems. We have used aires for overnights in France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Croatia, Slovenia and Belgium.
We are sensible if we stop on aires. We choose ones where other caravanners are overnighting. We have a cheap (Aldi) burglar alarm on the door which goes off if the door is opened.
The advantage of using aires is that we can drive until we are tired and then just stop in a suitable aire. We travel with the caravan "set-up" with the floor clear, bed made up and a little water in the loo flush and inboard water tanks. Then its just legs down, switch the fridge to gas, eat a convenience meal and then to bed. No need to unhook so we can be off promptly in the morning.
If we fancy a longer stop we find a campsite near our route - there are so many on the continent and just give them a quick phone call a few hours before we arrive. We find the CC's "Caravan Europe" and Alan Rogers site guides invaluable for finding suitable sites. More recently we have Alan Rogers and Archies POI on our Tom Tom Sat Nav.
If we do stop at a campsite we try to arrive by 4.00pm and often have a couple of nights so that we can look around the area.
