Hi All,
My names Ian but people call me Big E for reasons im not sure with yet!! Just joined up today so please go easy on me...... My wife and myself have been caravanning the grand total of 2 years now. We had a little abbey oxford for our first van. However we liked it that much we have now bought a new bailey ranger gt60 620/6......We like having the space.
We have been on holidays in england, however we are now looking at going to spain next year in june sometime. We have been looking at going to Camping Mas Sant Josep which is a yelloh site in the costa brava. We have been to this area of spain 3 times in the past, but always gone on the plain. We said that one day we would love to drive down this neck of the woods to see whats it's like.
I was hoping that someone could help me with the best route to take.......I have read that to avoid paris and that the toll roads are quicker. I have also read that you need a powerful car down in the south of france, because of hills rising to 1100 meters?? my motor is a 2004 KIA SEDONA 2.9 crdi auto and our van comes in at 1566kgs max. We have only used our van down in dorset so not very hilly.
I'm thinking of catching the 03:15 ferry out of dover to get a good start......Is it possable to do this run within 2 days?
Thanks Ian.

Well.......we drove to the very South of France, almost at the Pyrenees, last year and 1. it's a blooming long way and 2. it's very hilly in places.
We stopped at Dover, Evreux and Millau so I'd say that unless you want to have two VERY VERY long stressful days of driving, it might be worth adding at least one more stop each way.
We took the route Calais -Rouen-Evreux-Orleans-Bourge-ClermontFerrand-Millau-Beziers-Perpignan which completely negates the need to go anywhere near Paris, but does scale the heights of the massif central, which did climb fairly high at some points, but the cars and vans seemed to cope okay. Have you checked the maximum tow weight of your car/van and seen if the percentage is within accepted limits? There's a website you can check on if you aren't sure.
if you want to avoid the climb over the Central Massif you can use the same route to Orleans then use Vierzon, Limoge, Toulouse Narbonne then you are back on the same route as before. This route avoids big climbs, but costs more in tolls. We travel to the costa brava with one stop, but we are not towing.
Hi, we towed for the first time over the Massif Central this year. OH is an experienced tower and we had previously done a few good hills in Wales. It is high in places with a few good climbs. As long as you have a good power to weight ratio you'll be fine. There were a couple of places where the landscape and inclines are very deceptive. At one point it looked as if we were on the flat but the car was losing power! I started to get really worried, then realised as we passed a couple of lorries who were only doing about 45mph, that we were definitely going uphill and our car wasn't about to give up on us. It's a lovely route for the scenery and they put altitude markers at the side of the road which the kids loved! And coming down the other side, watching the landscape change from green gorges and mountains, to mediterranean plains is great!
