We went into Spain for the first time last September so have less experience than a lot of people on here.
But FWIW, we spent some time in the Pyrenees, which we found fantastic, the sites we stayed on were Camp Gavin, in Gavin (a Camping Cheque site) after that we moved to an ACSI site near Ainsa, Camping Pena Montanesa. Ainsa is a medieval village with wonderful views/buildings and very picturesque. We enjoyed the Pyrenees very much. From there we went east and stayed in Sitges, just to visit Barcelona by bus. And from there we went north and stayed on the Bay of Rosas for a week, another area we really liked very much.
We had also been made aware of possible "bandits" etc, and were alert at all times whilst travelling, however, pleased to report nothing happened. We travelled back into France on the main road, not motorway, just before the border there is a shopping area etc., where we saw a number of motorhomes and cars/caravans parked up. Whether this would be an area where it would be safer not to park, I don't know. But it struck us as being a possible target area for our criminal fraternity, ie unattended vehicles etc. But that is only my view of course.

Jan
i have been with my motorhome to spain in sept, well yes and no,i visited for 10days in early september last
and travel only to my site only 25miles from the port,it was my first trip abroad with the van,
and loved the site so much we never moved.
But this time i would like to see a little more,i started this thread with the intension of
traveling east ,but the more i read portugal seems more inviting to me,
The roads from santander to barcelona seemed very easy,( one direct route,(motorway )
which seemed the easy way out.
Please tell me if anyone know what are the roads from santander - portugal are like,
whats the weather like in early June, recommended sites ect.
